Elizabeth Dinh:
Learning to drive, but not on the road Fox Twelves Tony Martinez take us to the school of virtual reality driving in tonight’s Behind The wheel.

The dream of learning to drive in a completely risk the environment has become a reality or more specifically a virtual reality.

Pete Ferryman:
It’s all thanks to a company based in Hillsborough Fox Twelves Tony Martinez has more in today’s Behind The Wheel.

Dominic Dobson:
What this simulator does better than anything else is predicts what a driver will do in the real world.

Tony Martinez:
And based on that prediction the simulator or SIM as it’s called trains drivers to avoid trouble on the road.

Dominic Dobson:
The can correct problems in the simulator before they get in the vehicle and cause an accident.

Tony Martinez:
Creating safer drivers is the mission at VR Motion in Hillsboro. With their simulator they’ve trained thousands of EMTs to long-haul truckers and more.

Dominic Dobson:
For this particular one is a car that we set up, it’s a police cruiser and we have a simple driving test that we’ve created to train law enforcement officers.

Tony Martinez:
..enough chit chat it’s time to take the SIM for a spin!

Fortunately no Cones were harmed during this demonstration and I learned a quick lesson about speed control.

Dominic Dobson:
I think the quality of driving honestly could stand to be improved.

Tony Martinez:
the simulator is also well suited to teen drivers who become accustomed to learning not just through a screen rather than a book, but a high quality screen at that.

Dominic Dobson:
It’s very immersive and it creates memory retention that you don’t get when you’re looking at a flat screen.

Tony Martinez:
And as more self driving cars hit the road training in the SIM will help passive drivers develop a completely new skill set.

Dominic Dobson:
As autonomous cars come into effect it’s going to be hard for people like you and I have been driving for more in a couple years to let go and trust..

Tony Martinez:
For companies with a fleet of drivers increase safety means lower costs and better efficiency, but the bottom line for Dominic and the crew here at VR motion is Public Safety on the road for everyone.

Dominic Dobson:
There’s really a mind set all about safety now, and all these big companies that employ lots of driver’s safety is a value, and safety is one our values too.

Tony Martinez:
